Gateshead have confirmed Lee Cattermole as their new first-team manager, marking his first move into management. According to Sunderland Echo, the 38-year-old has agreed a two-year deal with the National League club.
He now begins his senior managerial career at the International Stadium after 272 Premier League appearances for Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Wigan Athletic. He ended his playing days with Dutch side VVV-Venlo in 2020 before turning to coaching.
He has since worked in Middlesbrough’s academy, joined first-team staffs at Bristol Rovers and Burnley, and coached the Northern Irish FA’s Under-17s. A little over a month ago he narrowly missed out on the Hartlepool United job.
Cattermole will work alongside Pools legend Ben Clark, who signed a long-term deal earlier this month to continue as first-team coach.
He said he is excited by the chance to manage, particularly at Gateshead, a club he feels has offered opportunities to first-time managers. He added that becoming a manager has long been his aim and he is keen for the challenge.
Cattermole said his vision will take time and he will set clear standards on professionalism, while remaining consistent in how he leads. He wants to learn Gateshead’s identity, protect its core and add his ideas, aiming to build something together rather than impose a single way.
