Lee Grant says Walsall are still not close to finishing their summer recruitment after a 5-0 home defeat by Premier League Aston Villa.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the Saddlers added two centre-backs on Tuesday, Wycombe loanee Declan Skura and Ryan Leak after a successful trial, and both started. Brian Madjo struck a first-half brace and George Hemmings also scored to give the Europa League champions a 3-0 lead at the break.

After the interval Luka Lynch made it four with a deflected strike, and Aidan Borland added a fifth soon after.

Grant said the numbers out still outweigh those in. Walsall are targeting additions who can raise the level and push for the starting XI, rather than signings for the sake of it.

He accepted frustration when standards slipped, but stressed the value of facing elite opposition, noting Villa’s status as Europa League champions and calling the night a worthwhile exercise.

The head coach admitted Skura had been thrown in after only 24 hours with the squad. He felt the defender improved as the game went on and said the test would benefit him and his team-mates.
