Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has praised Dominic Calvert-Lewin, describing him as “one of the best English strikers in the Premier League” and believes consistent performances could put him in the frame for the World Cup next summer.

The former Everton forward has scored four goals in his last four matches and Farke highlighted Calvert-Lewin’s determination to get back to the level he showed earlier in his career, such as during the 2020/21 campaign when he scored 21 goals in 39 appearances for Everton.

“First of all, he had a lack of game time, not just last season but I would say over the last couple of years,” Farke said.

“[He has had] many small injuries, and right now, it is crucial to take care of him, so that he stays fit, and can train regularly. It needs a few weeks to find the belief in your body back, and also the confidence in your game, and then to be in a good rhythm and this is, more or less, what has happened since he walked through the door.

“We are all pretty fortunate and grateful that we have him in such good shape.”

The 28-year-old’s resurgence has raised questions over a potential return to the England squad under Thomas Tuchel, given his experience of winning 11 caps for the Three Lions.

Beyond Harry Kane, there is space for competition in the centre-forward role. Marcus Rashford can deputise through the middle but is primarily used on the left for Barcelona, while Ollie Watkins has impressed for Aston Villa, but the door could be open for alternative players.

“He’s done it before,” Farke added.

“He has several caps for England. He also has quite a good goal record, so his quality and his potential was and is never in doubt.

“I don’t give any advice or recommendations to Thomas [Tuchel], he knows exactly what he needs in order to be successful at the World Cup

“But for Dominic, the same for each and every player, if you deliver with consistency, not just for a few games or for a few weeks. If you can show consistency in terms of performances over months, you have all the chance to be involved.

“For me, he is definitely one of the best English strikers in the Premier League and for him, there is no limit. Of course, there is a chance.”

Calvert-Lewin will look to extend his scoring run on Saturday evening against Crystal Palace, who face a gruelling schedule with three matches in six days.
