Leeds end Max Wober deal early as sell-on clause limits fee | OneFootball

Leeds United have agreed to terminate Max Wober’s contract a year early, ending the defender’s Elland Road stay.

According to The Athletic, the 28-year-old is in Germany for medical tests and is on the verge of joining Schalke on a free.

Wober arrived in January 2023 from RB Salzburg in a £10m deal, signing a four-and-a-half-year contract to 2027. He made 28 appearances for Leeds, then spent two seasons out on loan.

He played 25 Bundesliga games for Borussia Monchengladbach, then suffered a serious knee injury on his Werder Bremen debut last season. He managed only three appearances and Bremen did not take up a permanent option.

The Austrian had hoped to report back for pre-season, but he was among several seniors left out of Leeds’ USA tour squad.

A sell-on clause in his £10m move from RB Salzburg entitles his former club to a share of any future sale. Coupled with his injury-hit year, a sale was likely to bring only a minimal fee.

Ending his deal trims a Premier League wage from Leeds’ books and closes a difficult spell. Wober was among those who used relegation release clauses to join Monchengladbach in 2023 after Leeds dropped into the Championship.

Schalke have just returned to the Bundesliga after three years in the second tier, and count the 1996/97 UEFA Cup among their honours.
