England edged past Norway in a bruising World Cup quarter-final, sparking a mix of relief and elation among Leeds fans. Bellingham struck the equaliser before half time then delivered again in extra time as his side held on.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, readers across the city rode every twist. Jordan Pickford’s misjudgement of Andreas Schjelderup’s cross-shot put Norway ahead, Bellingham levelled before the interval, and a Harry Kane finish was ruled offside.

England laboured after the break, Torbjorn Heggem saw a goal ruled out and Kristoffer Ajer rattled the bar, and it remained level going into extra time. Bellingham then punished Orjan Nyland’s error to make it his sixth of the tournament.

Referee Turpin pointed to the spot when Spence was felled by Oscar Bobb, with Kane set to take it, before a VAR review overturned the decision. England saw it through to book Wednesday’s Atlanta semi-final against Argentina or Switzerland.

At half time, Kirsty Goodman felt the team needed to wake up, while she praised Gordon and Bellingham. Paul Nelson believed Bellingham, Kane and Gordon could turn it, and others called the display sloppy as Norway shut down the wings.

After full time, supporters spoke of frayed nerves and relief. Helen Louise Patterson accepted it was far from their best but welcomed the win, Nikki Hampson called it heart-stopping, while Rob Wilkinson wanted faster starts and Kaltun Burco said they had given blood, sweat and tears.
