Leeds United’s relegation fight may be boosted after Tottenham suffered a major setback involving captain Christian Romero.

Sky Sports reports that Spurs are to be without the centre-back for the remainder of the season, although his World Cup hopes are not believed to be over.

Romero left in tears during the second half of Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Sunderland after colliding with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky while trying to shield the ball under pressure from Brian Brobbey.

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi had hoped the issue would not be serious, calling Romero a top player with a big personality who is crucial to their run-in and ambitions.

Tottenham slipped into the Premier League relegation zone before playing, West Ham pulling two points clear with a 4-0 win over Wolves. Defeat kept Spurs 18th, three points behind Leeds, who visit Manchester United this evening.

Leeds play again before Spurs next kick off, hosting Wolves at Elland Road a few hours before Brighton visit north London. They also travel to Tottenham on Monday, May 11, a fixture likely to be a relegation six-pointer. Farke’s side could be between three and nine points clear by around five pm on Saturday.

The blow follows a setback for Mohammed Kudus, who is now likely to miss the rest of the season. Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert are also expected to be out, while James Maddison has not featured this campaign.
