Earlier on Saturday Leeds beat Wolves 3-0, then Rutter came off the bench to deny Spurs their first league win since December with a late equaliser at Tottenham Stadium.

The weekend ended with an eight-point gap between Leeds and Spurs, who sit 18th with five games left. Farke said his satisfaction was for a former player, though he accepted it might have helped Leeds a little.

Rutter had become a favourite at Elland Road, recovering from a slow start to shine in the Championship. He produced six goals and 15 assists as Leeds reached Wembley, before Southampton’s win allowed Brighton to trigger a release clause and sign him for £40m.

Farke said the moment prompted many jokes and that they had waited a year for that kind of finish. He described Rutter as a superb footballer and a remarkable person, and noted the forward’s emotional farewell.

He added that sometimes a player’s development moves quicker than a club can match. Farke said he pays little attention to other fixtures, though recent rounds have perhaps prompted a glance, and he is pleased when Rutter scores and plays well, unless it is against Leeds.
