Leeds United loanee Max Wober has withdrawn from Austria duty amid ongoing muscle problems, deepening an already troubled season at Werder Bremen.

Salzburger Nachrichten reported on Sunday that he left the national team’s Vienna base ahead of Tuesday’s friendly against South Korea, having been troubled by muscle issues for some time.

The 28-year-old joined Bremen on loan for 2025/26 and has not featured since his DFB-Pokal debut in August. A hamstring injury sidelined him for four months, then a return in a friendly against St. Pauli earlier this year brought a setback. Calf pain was diagnosed as a muscle fibre tear with tendon involvement, and he was due to see a London specialist before the break.

“After the friendly match [vs St. Pauli], I started having problems with my calf,” Wober said. “At first, they said it was a minor strain, but it took longer than expected. Then it turned into a muscle fibre tear, and finally a muscle fibre tear with tendon involvement,” he told the 1x1Sport Fußballtrainer podcast.

“I’m not far from being fit, but I still can’t get back to running and playing football completely pain-free. I hope this appointment will help me and that I can be back on the pitch in two weeks.”

Bremen hold an option to buy, yet with only one appearance it looks unlikely to be exercised. As things stand, he is set to report back to Leeds in the summer with 12 months left on his Elland Road deal.
