Leeds United reached Wembley after a chaotic FA Cup quarter-final at West Ham, surrendering a two-goal lead before prevailing on penalties.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, extra time saw Joel Piroe introduced for the second half, but he struggled to influence play and then missed the first penalty, his team-mates rescuing him. West Ham’s safety team initially ruled out the away end for the shootout, before backing down and allowing a proper coin toss to decide it.
Pascal Struijk, eight years at Elland Road, struck the decisive kick via the post then sprinted to the away end. Keeper Lucas Perri produced big saves during the game and again dominated the shootout despite an earlier wobble.
Contentious calls added to the chaos, with Anton Stach chopped late after shooting in the box and no foul given. Soon after, Lukas Nmecha was booked for a late slide, and there was a strong case for a free-kick before West Ham’s second due to Disasi’s high boot near Struijk’s face.
Off camera, Leeds staff looked bemused by the safety stance, while fans turned their backs to mark Monday’s anniversary of Chris Loftus and Kevin Speight.
Anton Stach appeared at the extra-time interval in a protective boot and on crutches. Daniel Farke again delivered a slice of history and will now lead Leeds out at Wembley against Chelsea.
