David Ornstein reported on Thursday morning that Howe was set to depart, and Sky Sports later announced his exit.

Howe, 48, had been in charge since November 2021. He had been expected to stay despite a difficult 2025-26, with Newcastle 12th and only two points ahead of Leeds, who finished 14th on their Premier League return.

Newcastle have reportedly lined up 38-year-old Matthias Jaissle of Al Ahli as a potential replacement.

Bookmakers have adjusted early relegation markets, with a notable call on Sunderland alongside shifts for Leeds and Newcastle.
