Leeds set for seven-figure boost as Charlie Cresswell seals £24m Rennes move | OneFootball

Leeds United are set for a seven-figure boost after former defender Charlie Cresswell completed a move to Rennes worth a reported €28m (£24m) in total. A sell-on clause from his 2024 sale to Toulouse positions the club for a payout.

According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, Rennes have taken the 23-year-old on loan for €2.5m, with an obligation to buy for €22.5m plus €3m in add-ons and a 10 per cent sell-on. He has signed until 2031.

Cresswell left Leeds for Toulouse in July 2024 in a £3.8m deal after limited opportunities under Daniel Farke. His stock has risen sharply since. Rennes finished sixth in Ligue 1 last season to secure Europa League football, a key pull in his decision.

Leeds inserted a 15 per cent sell-on for any future profit when they sold him in 2024. With the initial loan fee below £3.8m, Toulouse have not yet made a profit. Once next summer’s €22.5m obligation is triggered, the outlay would sit at about £21.4m, leaving roughly £17.6m in profit before bonuses.

In theory, Leeds should receive around £2.6m from that profit, which could increase by about £385,000 if all €3m (£2.57m) of add-ons are paid. Cresswell described Rennes as an exciting project, reflected warmly on two years in Toulouse, and hopes the club achieve great things.
