Leeds terminate Max Wober’s contract as sell-on clause limits sale options | OneFootball

Leeds United have mutually agreed to terminate Max Wober’s contract a year early, drawing a line under the defender’s short Elland Road spell.

The Athletic reports the 28-year-old is in Germany for medical tests, with a free move to Schalke nearing completion.

He joined from RB Salzburg for £10 million in January 2023, signing a four-and-a-half-year deal to 2027. He made 28 appearances for Leeds in all competitions.

Wober then spent two seasons on loan, making 25 Bundesliga appearances for Borussia Monchengladbach before suffering a serious knee injury on his Werder Bremen debut.

He featured only three times for Bremen, who did not take up a permanent option. Wober had hoped to rejoin Leeds for pre-season but was omitted from the USA tour squad.

A sell-on clause is understood to have been included in his 2023 transfer, entitling RB Salzburg to a share of any future fee. With an injury-hit year reducing his market value, a sale was likely to yield little, while his departure also removes a Premier League salary from the books.

Wober was among those to activate relegation release clauses in 2023 to join Monchengladbach after Leeds fell into the Championship. Schalke have returned to the Bundesliga after three seasons in the second tier and count the 1996/97 UEFA Cup among their honours.
