According to The Times, Leeds United are considering legal action against Leicester City following Burnley’s successful compensation case over Everton’s 2022 finance breach.

Last week Everton were ordered to pay Burnley almost £40 million after the Clarets argued they would have avoided 2021/22 relegation if the Toffees’ six-point deduction had applied that season rather than in 2023/24.

Everton are appealing the Premier League independent commission’s decision. The ruling is viewed as a watershed that could prompt further claims against clubs found to have broken finance rules.

Leeds are exploring whether they have a case linked to Leicester’s six-point deduction last season for a 2023/24 breach, a campaign in which Leicester won the Championship title and Leeds missed automatic promotion.

They are also assessing 2022/23, when both clubs were relegated from the Premier League. Separately, Leeds reached an out-of-court settlement with Everton last year over the Toffees’ 2022 breaches.

More broadly, Burnley’s success has revived the prospect of clubs seeking compensation from Manchester City if the club are found guilty of 115 alleged financial breaches, allegations City strongly deny.
