Leeds United’s 3-1 win over Burnley and West Ham’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford have opened a path to early safety. The Whites could be mathematically secure as soon as next Sunday if Arsenal win at West Ham.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Friday’s victory moved Leeds nine points clear of third-bottom Tottenham, though Spurs have four matches left to Leeds’ three. Tottenham visit Aston Villa at 7pm on Sunday, and defeat would keep the gap at nine with three to play while still falling short of mathematical safety.
Spurs’ goal difference is five worse than Leeds. Even a 1-0 loss at Villa would deepen that to six, yet the arithmetic would remain open. Leeds travel to Tottenham next Monday night.
West Ham’s setback leaves them seven behind Leeds with three games remaining. The Irons host title-chasing Arsenal next Sunday at 4.30pm. Unless Manchester City drop points at Everton on Monday, Arsenal must win to keep control of the race, and a Gunners victory would make Leeds mathematically safe with three games left to play.
Such a result would leave Leeds seven ahead of West Ham with only two fixtures for the Irons. Given West Ham’s minus 19 goal difference, even a draw would realistically leave Leeds safe, as the Irons would need to beat Newcastle and Leeds and overturn 14 goals.
If Spurs lose at Villa, they would then need victories over Leeds, Chelsea and Everton to have any chance of finishing above the Whites, even if Leeds do not add another point. The first definitive chance of confirmation arrives next Sunday afternoon.
