Four Premier League clubs are tracking the signature of Wolves defender Santiago Bueno this summer

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be spending the 2026/27 season in the Championship, after their long-awaited relegation from the Premier League was confirmed following West Ham United's goalless draw at Crystal Palace last Monday.

It has been a season to forget at Molineux, with Wolves set to spend next year back in the second tier after eight years in the top-flight.

In truth, the writing has been on the wall for the Black Country outfit since the first kick of the ball this season, seeing the likes of Matheus Cunha, Rayan Ait-Nouri, and Nelson Semedo all leave the club over the summer, and failing to adequately replace any of them.

Vitor Pereira's spell in charge ended in disaster, and the appointment of Rob Edwards from Middlesbrough has done little in the way of improving their form.

It's set to be a busy summer for the Old Gold, who will likely see an array of departures following their demotion, with fresh links to one of their star defenders having recently emerged.

Uruguayan defender Santiago Bueno is set to have his pick of clubs this summer, with Sport Witness reporting that four Premier League clubs are chasing his signature following Wolves' relegation, including Leeds United, Crystal Palace, West Ham and Brentford.

Bueno has emerged as an ever-present under Edwards over the past few months, and despite Wolves' troubles, has impressed, leading to several top-flight clubs tracking his situation.

The 27-year-old reportedly has no plans to stick around in the Championship next year and is looking to secure a move back to the Premier League as quickly as possible.

Having spent time in the youth systems of Penarol in his native country and FC Barcelona, Bueno joined Girona in 2019 and helped the club achieve promotion to the top flight before making the move to Molineux in the summer of 2023 for £8.5 million.

The Uruguayan international has since made over 80 appearances for the Black Country side, scoring three and assisting three from defence, though he has only recently nailed down his place in the back line in recent months.

Despite this, at least four Premier League sides are said to be keen to offer him an immediate return to the top-flight, though it is unknown at this stage what sort of fee Wolves will command for the 27-year-old.

The Athletic previously reported that the likes of Joao Gomes, Andre, David Moller Wolfe, Jose Sa, and Hwang Hee-chan are all expected to leave this summer, whilst Czechian defender Ladislav Krejci is also reportedly attracting interest from the likes of Leeds, as Wolves are set to see a flurry of money come their way for their outgoings shortly.

Edwards has a huge job on his hands to rebuild Wolves this summer, with Bueno almost certain to play no part next campaign.

Welsh boss Edwards is set to embark on a major rebuilding job with Wolves this summer.

The former Watford, Luton Town, and Middlesbrough boss will have been well aware of the very real possibility of relegation when he took the job back in November 2025, as would have the Wolves board, so the prospect of a rebuild won't be a real surprise.

However, this won't necessarily make the process much easier, as the Old Gold will require major surgery to prepare their squad for the trials and tribulations of the second tier next time out.
