Leeds United could bank a modest Premier League windfall if Southampton win the Championship play-offs this month. Ipswich Town are already up after a 3-0 win over Queens Park Rangers.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Ipswich’s second-year parachute payment, roughly £40m, now returns to the top-flight pool to be shared among 20 clubs. If Southampton also go up, a similar sum would join it, taking the redistributed total to about £80m, or roughly £4m per team.
Southampton enter the play-offs on a 19-game unbeaten run and are widely fancied at Wembley. Parachute payments are designed to cushion relegated clubs after the revenue fall, with last season’s equal-share broadcast pot worth £89m.
Ahead of this season, Ipswich and Southampton each received 55 per cent of that equal share, just under £49m. Leeds waived their third-year instalment after promotion, and neither Ipswich nor Southampton would be due a third payment if they return at the first attempt.
Leeds are expected to bank more than £100m in broadcast income this season, including equal-share and commercial revenue. Merit payments, worth just under £3m per place, provide further incentive to finish strongly against Tottenham, Brighton and West Ham. Last season, 14th earned £18.6m and 10th earned £29.1m.
