Leeds United Face Stern Competition To Sign €80M Player: Why Should Farke Walk Away?

Daniel Farke wants a proper, commanding centre-back with a genuine top-flight pedigree to anchor Leeds United’s backline back in the Premier League. Ousmane Diomande fits that profile perfectly. The 22-year-old Sporting CP defender has already racked up over 120 senior appearances in Lisbon, becoming an indispensable figure under Rui Borges and a fixture for the Ivory Coast ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

Leeds tracking Diomande, but face a major scramble

According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, as relayed by Sport Witness, Elland Road officials are keeping tabs on him. However, the queue is massive and heavyweight.

Arsenal and Chelsea are pushing hard. Mikel Arteta’s scouts watched the defender closely during their Champions League quarter-final clash with Sporting, while Chelsea’s interest has intensified recently. Even Bournemouth are in contention, flaunting the European football they secured last term, something Leeds simply cannot offer. Sporting hold all the cards here after tying Diomande down to a contract until 2030 earlier this year. That deal includes an €80 million release clause. While reports suggest the Lisbon giants might talk business for slightly less, any bidding war will inevitably skyrocket if he shines on the global stage this summer.

Why must Farke walk away from this deal?

Let’s be realistic. Leeds should drop this immediately.

It is a non-starter. Not because Diomande lacks the quality, he is an absolute Rolls-Royce of a defender, but because Leeds United are bringing a knife to a laser fight. Arsenal and Chelsea operate in a different financial stratosphere. For them, an €80 million outlay is a routine line on a balance sheet. Bournemouth might not have that raw muscle, but they have continental football in their back pocket. Leeds United have neither. Expecting a player of Diomande’s trajectory to choose West Yorkshire over the Champions League is pure fantasy.

The timing is also terrible. With the World Cup kicking off, Sporting are under zero pressure to sell early. They will monitor every tackle and interception in the knowledge that a solid tournament adds millions to his price tag overnight.

Farke is a pragmatist at heart. He knows his recruitment team needs to target players where Leeds actually possess some leverage. Chasing a glamorous, elite-level prospect with half of Europe breathing down his neck is a waste of valuable time and energy. It risks a highly public rejection when the club should be quietly locking down achievable, quality targets elsewhere.
