The Leeds United Supporters’ Network has condemned Jimmy Savile chants heard during Sunday’s match at Crystal Palace, saying such songs do not belong in football or society, in a statement.

Chants about the disgraced TV presenter were again audible at Selhurst Park during the Premier League fixture on Sunday 15 March 2026. They have been regularly heard at Leeds United games.

Leeds United are pushing for the Crown Prosecution Service to have such songs categorised under tragedy chanting, so they can be treated as a criminal offence. Savile was born in Leeds but had no connection to the club.

The supporters’ group backs the club’s push. It highlights research and testimony indicating that references to Savile can trigger traumatic memories for survivors of sexual abuse and cause genuine psychological distress.

It also urges football’s authorities, clubs and supporters, alongside the Football Supporters' Association, to support stronger measures so the abuse is addressed with the seriousness required. The statement followed a week of publicity focused on tackling the issue.
