Alex Cairns has signed a two-year contract extension at Leeds United to 2028, keeping the 33-year-old in Daniel Farke's senior squad.

With the goalkeeping department centre stage this summer, Illan Meslier has joined Arsenal as a free agent, while Karl Darlow is close to confirming a move to Manchester United after turning down new terms. yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk understands that Leeds could not guarantee he would be number one, with plans to bring in another senior keeper this summer.

The new deal continues Cairns' long association with the club and he will remain an experienced part of the first-team group.

A product of the academy, the Yorkshire-born stopper debuted in 2011/12, then left in 2015 after a series of loans.

He returned from Salford City in summer 2024 after playing every league game for the Ammies the previous season, and has amassed over 300 career appearances.

Cairns is a regular presence at Leeds United Foundation sessions, promoting wellbeing and social activity. He follows captain Ethan Ampadu in agreeing fresh terms at Elland Road this summer.
