Leeds United ‘interested in’ John Stones as £34m Muharemovic deal reshapes defence | OneFootball

Leeds United have reshaped their defence by signing Tarik Muharemovic for £34m on a five-year deal, amid links to England international John Stones.

According to the BBC, Leeds were interested in free agent John Stones after his contract at the Etihad expired this summer, with the claim emerging as Muharemovic completed his medical.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina centre-back becomes the club’s second most expensive arrival, joining from Serie A side Sassuolo. His signing follows Pascal Struijk’s £20m move to Brighton.

Muharemovic would form the likely first-choice back three with Joe Rodon and Jaka Bijol if Daniel Farke keeps the system that worked in the second half of last season.

James Justin and Sebastiaan Bornauw provide further cover at centre-back, while captain Ethan Ampadu can step into defence if required.

It is understood Leeds explored a move for Stones towards the end of last season, but his wages were always likely to be a stumbling block. Muharemovic’s arrival further changes the defensive picture at Elland Road.
