Leeds United’s push for a new goalkeeper is growing urgent, with competition for Zion Suzuki threatening to drive the price beyond the club’s reach.
Gazzetta reports that a bidding battle for the Parma and Japan international could push his fee past £30m, and he is not expected at Parma’s first day of pre-season today after World Cup duty.
Leeds extended 33-year-old Alex Cairns on a two-year deal last week, and with Lucas Perri still in situ, there are two senior options as pre-season begins. The exits of Ilan Meslier and Karl Darlow as free agents have left a sizeable gap, which could widen if Torino’s loan interest in Perri progresses after his fall from favour last season.
Securing a new number one is a priority. Leeds’ pursuit is understood to have contributed to Darlow rejecting fresh terms, with no promise of the starting role at the beginning of the season.
Suzuki is believed to top Leeds’ shortlist after enhancing his reputation with Japan this summer. Aston Villa are also keen, Newcastle United could enter the market, and Paris St Germain have been credited with interest in the past 24 hours.
