Leeds United lost 4-3 at St James’ Park on Wednesday night, despite leading three times against Newcastle United. The decisive goal arrived 13 minutes into second-half added time, ending Leeds’ seven-game unbeaten run.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Brenden Aaronson struck twice and Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted a penalty, yet none of the leads stuck.

There was an early boost as Joe Rodon returned straight to the XI after an ankle ligament lay-off. Initially earmarked to come back after this weekend’s FA Cup tie with Derby County, he still played 97 minutes, covering, blocking and tackling. He limped off shortly before the fourth goal, and it looked like cramp.

Aaronson’s form is surging, his brace making it three goals in two matches. The away end sang his name throughout. He was unlucky to concede a penalty for handball, but his overall display impressed.

A familiar tormentor returned, with Harvey Barnes scoring Newcastle’s first and the winner, a spinning effort after untidy defending. Leeds had been among three teams he had six against, and now sit alone as his favourite opponents. They will not face him again this season.

To emerge empty-handed after leading into stoppage time was devastating for Daniel Farke’s side. Before Wednesday, Newcastle had not taken a single Premier League point from behind, now they have three. There were positives in the performance, but no one will feel good about the result.
