Leeds United terminate Max Wober's contract, sell-on clause and Schalke switch context | OneFootball

Leeds United have mutually agreed to terminate Max Wober's contract a year early, clearing the way for the defender's permanent exit.

The Athletic reports that the 28-year-old is in Germany for medical tests ahead of a free transfer to Schalke.

Wober arrived from RB Salzburg in January 2023 for £10 million on a four-and-a-half-year deal to 2027, but made only 28 appearances and spent two seasons out on loan.

A steady spell at Borussia Monchengladbach brought 25 Bundesliga outings. A serious knee injury on his Werder Bremen debut last season limited him to three games, and the option was not taken up.

A sell-on clause in his 2023 switch entitles RB Salzburg to a share of any future fee, and an injury-hit season meant any sale would have returned little.

His departure removes a Premier League wage from Leeds' books and draws a line under a difficult Elland Road stint. He was among those who used relegation release clauses to join Monchengladbach in 2023 after the drop to the Championship.

Schalke have spent the past three years in Germany's second tier and were just promoted back to the Bundesliga. They remain one of the country's historic clubs, with honours including the 1996/97 UEFA Cup.
