Leicester City, who beat Leeds United to promotion in 2023/24, have been docked six points in the Championship for breaching financial rules. The sanction takes immediate effect.
The Premier League said in a statement that an independent commission recommended the deduction after finding a breach of the EFL Profit and Sustainability Rules for 2023/24. The investigation moved to the Premier League on Leicester’s 2024 promotion, with an arbitration ruling in March 2025 confirming jurisdiction and a referral in May 2025.
During a week-long hearing in November 2025, Leicester’s legal challenges, including a competition law claim, were rejected. The commission accepted the club’s assessment period and a player cost accounting policy, yet still concluded losses exceeded the threshold by £20.8 million across 2022-2024. It also found Leicester failed to file annual accounts by the deadline and dismissed a claim of exceptional cooperation, noting improving finances as mitigation.
As Leicester are currently a Championship club, the EFL Board ratified an immediate points deduction. The penalty leaves them just above the relegation zone, level with 21st-placed Blackburn Rovers on 32 points, and at risk of back-to-back relegations.
Leicester won the 2023/24 title, finishing seven points clear of third-placed Leeds, who went to the play-offs and lost to Southampton at Wembley. Their Premier League return lasted one season, a 25-point total sealing 18th place and relegation.
