Leicester City have appointed Russell Martin as manager on a three-year deal. The club said in a statement that Gary Rowett and assistant Callum Davidson are leaving.

Martin takes over with City in League One after back-to-back relegations. The former Scotland international left Rangers in October and has been out of work since departing Ibrox.

Rowett had led City since February following the sacking of Marti Cifuentes. The former Leicester defender could not keep the club in the Championship and his contract expired at the end of the season.

Martin said he is delighted to join and eager to start working with players and staff. He described Leicester as a club with rich history, strong support and high expectations, and said he looks forward to getting to know the club, the city and the supporters.

He said his immediate focus is on building strong relationships, setting clear standards and creating performances Leicester fans can connect with and be proud of.

He added that players must give everything for supporters, who he called the most important people at any club, and that his job is to deliver a team that wins and one they can go on a journey with.

Chief football officer Jon Rudkin thanked Rowett and Davidson for stepping in at a challenging time, praising their integrity and hard work. He said the club are grateful for their efforts and wished them well for the future.
