The Foxes are chasing a quick return to the Championship, and FLW's Leicester correspondent is all in favour of moving for the Wrexham goalkeeper.

Leicester City could be set to make a move for goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, who's proved himself in both the Championship and League One for Wrexham over the last couple of seasons.

A second successive relegation was the last thing that Leicester City supporters expected from 2025-26. Falling from the Premier League less than a decade after winning it had been enough of a shock, but dropping a level would give them a chance to regroup and push for a quick return.

By May, those hopes lay in tatters. Leicester were relegated by five points, after having been deducted six over breaches of PSR during the season. By the end of the season, any thoughts of returning to the Premier League were long forgotten. Gary Rowett, who'd arrived at the club as a short-term replacement for Marti Cifuentes, did not see his contract extended beyond the end of the season.

But with the summer break comes an opportunity for a reset, a rebuild, and a degree of optimism. Russell Martin has been appointed as the club's new manager for next season, and thoughts are already turning to which players could be brought in to try and ensure that their stay in League One is brief, but for better reasons than their stay in the Championship was.

"A great prospect" - Arthur Okonkwo backed to be a hit at Leicester City

One player with whom Leicester City have been associated of late has been Wrexham's goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, who has been linked with a move away from the Racecourse Ground following his club's seventh-placed finish in the Championship last season, with journalist Alan Nixon reporting that Leicester could be set to make a move for the 24-year-old.

Football League World have spoken to our Leicester City fan pundit Jamie Preston about the possibility of the Foxes making a move for Okonkwo, and Jamie is extremely enthusiastic for his club to do so, identifying recent issues with goalkeeping as the primary reason why they should do so.

"Getting the lad in from Wrexham would be a great prospect for Leicester," Jamie told FLW.

"We've had problems with goalkeepers since Kasper Schmeichel left. We've had Danny Ward, Asmir Begovic, Jakub Stolarczyk and Mads Hermansen, no-one's really settled in, so I think getting him, more likely on loan than on a permanent deal, would be an absolutely great idea for Leicester."

Jamie feels that Okonkwo's Premier League heritage is an indicator of his quality, and feels that his club should make this move, though he does have reservations over whether Okonkwo would want to go to a club in League One.

"He is riding a wave of confidence with back-to-back promotions and the play-offs last year," Jamie added.

"He had a good grounding at Arsenal before he went to Wrexham, so getting in a keeper of his standing would be great, but whether he'd want to drop to League One, I'm not sure, but hopefully we can work something out and get him in. It would be a great idea to get him in at Leicester."

Arthur Okonkwo could be a valuable addition to Leicester - if he can be persuaded to drop to League One

The question of whether Arthur Okonkwo will be available to Leicester City depends on a couple of variables.

Having finished in seventh place in the Championship at the end of the 2025-26 season, Wrexham are keen to keep pushing for a place in the Premier League, and they've been connected to a possible move for Anthony Patterson.

Patterson was the Sunderland goalkeeper as the Black Cats were promoted to the Premier League through the play-offs in 2025, but the club made the decision to sign the Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs during the summer, who dislodged Patterson from the position at The Stadium of Light.

The goalkeeper went on loan for the second half of 2025-26 at Millwall, where he helped them to finish third in the Championship, and with Roefs having impressed all season with Sunderland, Wrexham could be in line to make a move to Patterson, though they will face opposition from Millwall themselves.

If Okonkwo is deemed surplus to requirements, then a move to Leicester would make perfect sense for the club. Okonkwo has impressed since joining Wrexham from Arsenal in 2024 upon the expiry of his contract to such an extent that he's even picked up a couple of caps for the Nigeria international team since switching his international allegiance to them in April.

Okonkwo's growing profile could cost Leicester. It's not known whether he will want to drop a division in order to play in League One, and he may not want to, having just broken into international football for the first time.

But the Foxes do remain a big draw. They were Premier League champions a decade ago and FA Cup winners five years ago. With Salary Sport estimating them at £8,500-a-week, his wage demands may not be excessive and he only has a year left to run on his contract.
