Leicester City complete second signing of day as Russell Martin gets transfer reunion | OneFootball

Leicester City have signed experienced goalkeeper Alex McCarthy on a two-year deal, reuniting him with Russell Martin at the King Power Stadium.

According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, the former England youth international chose City after turning down other options, following his Southampton exit this summer at the end of a 10-year stay.

Under Martin he made nine appearances in 2023/24 and kept goal for Southampton’s final five Championship matches and their play-off run, which ended in a 1-0 win over Leeds United at Wembley.

The 36-year-old joins Jakub Stolarczyk and Fran Vieites in the goalkeeping group at Seagrave. Martin had hinted at a move on Tuesday, also confirming Asmir Begovic had left.

His signing came on the same day the Foxes unveiled Conor Chaplin. The club are thought to be close to adding Danny Ings.

McCarthy’s place in the pecking order is unclear. Stolarczyk was number one last season and Vieites did not feature after joining from Real Betis.

Stolarczyk and Vieites have split minutes in Leicester’s first two pre-season friendlies and Martin said he was pleased with both. “I thought they both did great tonight, in different ways. Jakub pulled off an amazing save, but with their feet tonight as well, they’ve been great.”
