Leicester City have been docked six points after an independent commission found a breach of Profit and Sustainability Rules, a punishment applied immediately that drops them to 20th in the Championship. The club could yet appeal.

According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, the commission ruled the club exceeded the permitted loss threshold by about £20.8 million over the assessment period ending in 2023/24, closing a long-running dispute over finances. The case centred on accounts from their previous promotion campaign.

The Premier League argued for a 12-point starting position under sanctioning guidelines. It also advanced alternatives between seven and 10 points, which Leicester described as unprecedented.

Leicester contended any deduction should be five or six points, citing the Everton and Nottingham Forest precedents, and noting an insolvency event brings an automatic nine-point penalty. The League alleged the club disrupted and delayed the process, but the commission found no aggravating factors to increase the punishment.

Mitigation was accepted, with the panel recognising an improving financial position in the 2024 financial year, which tempered the sanction. It also agreed to assess compliance over 36 months in line with Leicester’s interpretation, providing clarity for the 2025 fiscal year.

Leicester issued a statement expressing disappointment, maintaining the six-point deduction is disproportionate despite being lower than the League’s push. They are reviewing the full decision to consider their options and to ensure any further steps are determined through appropriate processes.
