Leicester City marked their 2016 triumph with a joyous 5000/1 Anniversary match on Saturday, a welcome respite from recent struggles.
According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, nostalgia flowed from Marc Albrighton’s in-swingers to Jamie Vardy appearing in sunglasses as his Liverpool strike from 10 years ago played. Conrad Logan, now managing local non-league Anstey Nomads, finished as the hero with two penalty saves.
Christian Fuchs returned as Newport County’s League Two boss and his name has been very briefly mentioned as a candidate to take over the Foxes in League One. Arriving less than two hours before kick-off, he posed for photos outside the players’ reception, where one banner urged him to take the job.
Claudio Ranieri, sacked in 2017 without a proper farewell, was serenaded early on. He stepped from the dugout and waved to the three open stands with a broad smile.
After the stands thinned, staff set around 12 benches along the touchline and a catering station appeared. Players emerged with families to catch up in the sun, and a PA message told waiting fans outside that photos would be delayed.
Club chairman Khun Top attended with his family, his first sighting since relegation was confirmed last month, and he stopped for pictures before greeting more supporters in the club shop. Referee John Brookes, a Leicester fan who cannot officiate their matches or those linked to the club, kept order and even broke out the vanishing spray for a Marc Albrighton free-kick.
