Leicester City may have to add a deep midfielder to their January plans if Boubakary Soumare leaves, with Marti Cifuentes saying he “cannot predict” the player’s future.
L’Equipe reports that Monaco have the 26-year-old in their sights as he enters the final six months of his contract, making this window the last chance to sell.
Soumare has been out since the end of November with a knee problem but is due to be fit for next weekend’s M69 Derby. Cifuentes currently counts him among four options for the two deeper roles alongside Oliver Skipp, Jordan James and Louis Page.
“My main target with Bouba is getting him back, recovering from his injury,” Cifuentes said.
“What can happen, I don’t have a crystal ball. I cannot predict. What I know is that when he’s in good form, he’s a good player.”
City already want a striker and an attacking midfielder after Aaron Ramsey’s latest setback. If Soumare goes, a deeper midfielder would be needed to compete with Skipp, with seemingly no route back for Harry Winks, whose deal also ends in the summer.
Skipp has started eight straight matches during Soumare’s absence and Winks has been overlooked. He could be rested when the FA Cup campaign begins at Cheltenham on Saturday at 12.15, with Hamza Choudhury a possible stand-in despite being viewed primarily as a full-back.
