Leicester City have secured Nathan Opoku on a new contract to avoid losing the striker for nothing this summer.

LeicesterMercury.co.uk reports that the Ghanaian, on loan at League Two Newport County, has added a year to his terms, keeping him at the King Power Stadium until summer 2027.

Opoku joined City in January 2023 after US college football. He has yet to make a senior appearance, spending one and a half seasons at sister club OH Leuven before a leg fracture sidelined him for a year.

He moved to Newport last summer alongside Sammy Braybrooke. Braybrooke switched to Chesterfield in January, while Opoku’s loan was extended to the end of this season.

He has featured in 23 League Two games and is joint-top scorer with five goals.

Once rock bottom, Newport’s form has picked up under City’s title-winning left-back Christian Fuchs, and they now sit in the relegation zone on goal difference with 10 matches remaining.

Opoku turns 25 this summer, so a breakthrough at Leicester had looked unlikely. The new deal means he can be assessed in pre-season to see if there is a role, otherwise a sale could bring in a fee.
