With an early strike against Club Brugge on Wednesday night, Lennart Karl etched his name into the record books as the youngest German ever to score in the Champions League, surpassing a teammate from Bayern Munich.
At just 17 years and 8 months old, Karl found the net in only his second Champions League outing. His debut came in late September, when he featured in the closing minutes of Bayern’s 5-1 rout of Pafos.
Absent from Wednesday’s match was Jamal Musiala, who had previously held the record after scoring at 17 years and 11 months in 2021. Completing the top three is Pierre Littbarski - a World Cup winner with Germany and Cologne legend - who first struck in the competition at 18 years and 4 months back in 1978.
The latest prodigy to emerge from German football, Karl is a left-footed midfielder blessed with composure, vision and a confident presence on the pitch. Wednesday’s game marked his tenth senior appearance - and just his third start - with the goal against Brugge serving as the first of his professional career, adding to a single assist so far.
