It is decision day for Didier Deschamps. Later tonight, the France manager will name his squad for this summer’s FIFA World Cup. Speaking on Monday, he said that he still had “two or three” decisions to make. One of them almost certainly pertains to the third-choice goalkeeper role.
It looks to be a battle between Robin Risser and Hugo Lloris. Deschamps isn’t the only one to have weighed up the two goalkeepers. As he tells beIN Sports, RC Lens sporting director Jean-Louis Léca had a similar choice to make last summer.
Lens were in the market for a new No.1 last summer. As Léca told beIN Sports, it was a choice between “the emblematic goalkeeper of the France national team, or their new one.” Ultimately, Lens opted for Risser, who joined from formative club RC Strasbourg Alsace for a nominal fee.
Risser has turned out to be a good pick. The Frenchman was included in the UNFP Team of the Season and could yet be heading to this summer’s World Cup, perhaps at Lloris’ expense.
