Léo Duarte sees at Galo the chance to write a new chapter

Signed by Atlético for the remainder of the season, Léo Duarte was officially introduced this Thursday (25) at Cidade do Galo by Football VP Paulo Bracks. After the training session open to the press, the center-back gave a press conference and spoke to journalists for the first time as an Alvinegro player.

At 29, the defender arrives at the Club after six seasons in European football, bringing the experience he gained during spells with AC Milan in Italy and Istanbul Basaksehir in Turkey, as well as the expectation of contributing to a squad competing in major tournaments in 2026.

During his presentation, Léo Duarte said Atlético’s sporting project was decisive in his decision to return to Brazilian football.

“When Atlético got in touch, I was very happy. I spoke a lot with my family, and we understood that this was the right time. It’s a huge club, with passionate fans, and one that is always fighting for titles. I’m coming in motivated to help and do a good job,” he said.

Developed at Flamengo, Léo Duarte was transferred to AC Milan in 2019. In Italy, he had the opportunity to be around some of world football’s biggest names and expand his professional experience in one of the sport’s most traditional environments.

“I was able to learn a lot. I met people who were important to my development as an athlete and as a person. All of that contributed to the maturity I have today,” he said.

After his time in Italian football, the center-back moved to Turkey, where he played for five and a half seasons. During that period, he established himself as a starter and put together an important run of matches, an experience he believes is key for this stage of his career.

“It was a very important period. I played regularly, gained experience, and matured a lot. Today I feel ready to help the group and contribute in the best way possible on and off the pitch.”

When recalling important names in his development as a center-back, Léo Duarte highlighted the partnership he had with Réver early in his career. The two played together at Flamengo in 2018, a season in which the defender was beginning to make his mark in professional football.

“Réver is a guy I grew up watching play. I had the chance to play alongside him and learn a lot. We had a really good partnership during that period, and it was an important experience for me,” he said.

That memory carries special meaning for Atlético fans. Captain of the club’s 2013 Libertadores-winning team, one of the players who lifted the most trophies for Galo, and one of the greatest idols in the Club’s recent history, Réver is part of a tradition of great defenders who left their mark wearing the black-and-white shirt.

Now, by putting on the Galo shirt, Léo Duarte becomes part of that history and arrives motivated to build his own path at Atlético.

In addition to his professional growth, Léo also highlighted the personal growth he has experienced in recent years. Married and the father of three children, he believes his family played a fundamental role in his journey during his time abroad.

“The birth of my first child had a huge impact on my life. It was a moment that brought responsibilities and made me mature. My family was by my side at every moment and played an important part in the person I became.”

The defender also highlighted faith as one of the pillars of his journey and said he tries to keep the same values regardless of the challenges he has faced throughout his career.

“I try to stay true to who I am in any situation. Faith helps me a lot with that and is part of my life.”

Already integrated into Atlético’s squad, Léo Duarte will have a preparation period alongside his teammates before competitions resume. The center-back believes the mid-season break will be important to speed up his adaptation to the group and the team’s style of play.

“We’ll have an important period of work. I want to make the most of this time to get to know my teammates better, understand even more how the team plays, and be ready to help when the opportunity comes.”

Speaking about his arrival at Atlético, the new signing also highlighted the structure he found at Cidade do Galo and the welcome he received in his first few days in Belo Horizonte.

“I was very well received by everyone. I already knew Atlético’s strength and that of its fans, but now I’m getting the chance to see the Club’s entire structure up close. I’m very happy to be part of this project.”

Finally, Léo Duarte left a message for the Massa Atleticana.

“The fans can expect commitment, professionalism, respect for the shirt, and a real desire to compete. I’ll work every day to honor this opportunity and help Atlético achieve its goals. That will never be lacking.”
