In Flamengo’s customary high line, Ortiz stepped into midfield to take a pass from Royal, then delivered a pinpoint ball to find the full-back inside the box, who crossed for Carrascal to finish. According to Coluna Do Fla, fans singled out the defender’s vision and execution.

Social media posts suggested such playmaking from a centre-back is rare and that the sporting upside outweighs any financial return. Others argued he is outstanding and not easily replaced.

Ortiz is under contract with Flamengo until the end of 2028. Napoli and other European clubs have recently made enquiries, and there is a chance of a bid during the World Cup. Flamengo do not intend to negotiate key squad members, so only an offer deemed irresistible would prompt a sale.

Free of injuries and suspensions, Ortiz is available for the next match against Vitória on Thursday 14, the second leg of the fifth phase of the Copa do Brasil. Flamengo won the first leg 2-1 at the Maracanã, and now head to Barradão needing only a draw to advance.
