According to Coluna Do Fla, Flamengo centre-back Léo Pereira has defended Danilo’s importance to the Brazil squad, pointing to the veteran’s experience and influence on and off the pitch.
Pereira said it matters to have Danilo close whether on the field or not, adding that the full-back is always talking for the group’s benefit. He admitted he does not know what the back four will be or who will start, but stressed the value of having someone of Danilo’s calibre guiding team-mates. He noted they try to make the most of a multiple title winner with vast experience.
This is Pereira’s first senior call-up and he made his debut in a defeat to France. Coach Carlo Ancelotti said he liked the defender with the ball at his feet in that match.
While Pereira debuted, Flamengo’s No 13 Danilo remained on the bench against France. The captain could replace the withdrawn Wesley at right-back, a role the veteran has filled for much of his career.
With Pereira and Danilo available, Flamengo face Red Bull Bragantino on the second of April after the FIFA window. Kick-off is 21:30 Brasília time at Estádio Cícero de Souza Marques, in round nine of the Brasileirão.
