There has been speculation over Exequiel Palacios’ future lately, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the Argentine midfielder is open to leaving Bayer Leverkusen and that RB Leipzig and Ipswich Town are interested in signing him.
When local outlet Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger asked Bayer Leverkusen sporting managing director Simon Rolfes about the speculation on Sunday, he responded:
“There are always rumours about certain players. Palacios is one of the players for whom this has happened from time to time in recent years."
While remaining relaxed about the situation, Rolfes stopped short of ruling out a departure.
Palacios’ fellow central midfielders Robert Andrich, Aleix García and Equi Fernández have also been linked with moves away from the club. However, new signing Kennet Eichhorn’s recent injury could have an impact on their futures, as it has left Die Werkself with one option less in central midfield for the time being.
Speaking specifically about Andrich, Rolfes said:
“We have valued Robert highly for years – also because of the way he contributes. But the same applies to him as to everyone else: he has to put himself in a good sporting position and fight for his place.
"Kennet is currently unavailable as a competitor. Nevertheless, we still have four players for two positions, plus Noah Mbamba. So the competition in this position remains high.”
