Borussia Mönchengladbach fell into another heavy defeat as Stuttgart extended their winning streak away from home in the Bundesliga to three games.
There were only two notable moments in a quiet first half, but Leweling was at the thick of both incidents. The sought-after winger first conceded a penalty-kick for a handball from Franck Honorat’s delivery.
With Kevin Diks out with a head injury, Haris Tabaković took the responsibility. However, the 31-year-old striker was unable to beat Alexander Nübel. Stuttgart also defended the rebound as the hosts missed a great opportunity to take the lead in a game of few chances. The Bosnian striker failed to convert both of his penalties in the Bundesliga.
Leweling’s night got even better when he opened the scoring with a brilliant finish at the half-hour mark. All four Bundesliga strikes by Leweling came in the last three away games as he continued his fine form in front of goal.
Stuttgart nearly doubled their lead early after the restart, but Ermedin Demirović’s effort from close range was well saved by Nicolas in Gladbach’s goal. The goal scorer and Demirović left their spots for Chris Führich and Deniz Undav at the hour mark.
Nicolas made another decent save from Badredine Bouanani’s effort before Stuttgart’s shout for a penalty kick was waved away by the referee. Nikolas Nartey, who scored his first goal in a rollercoaster win over Eintracht Frankfurt, had a very good second half for Stuttgart.
And, the visitors sealed the three points in the 67th minute. Joe Scally was unable to clear his lines before Leweling’s goal, and he was unfortunately involved in another goal as he beat his own goalkeeper from Führich’s corner-kick.
Gladbach's shot-stopper had to take the ball out of the net once again when Undav struck Stuttgart’s third after Philipp Sander easily handed possession to the lively Angelo Stiller. Undav's strange goal celebration indicated that he isn't too pleased with something mentioned about him in the media.
Fourth-placed Stuttgart will end the league phase of their Europa League campaign at home against Young Boys before hosting Freiburg in the Bundesliga. Gladbach’s next game will be away at fellow strugglers Werder Bremen.
