Full-back could prove useful cover for Luke Shaw, who is out of contract next summer

Manchester United are considering whether to move for Newcastle full-back Lewis Hall after the club was thrown into chaos by the news of Eddie Howe’s impending departure.

The Magpies are facing another summer of turmoil after a chastening 2025/26 campaign saw them finish 12th in the Premier League, with key midfielder Sandro Tonali departing to Tottenham in a £100m deal and Bruno Guimaraes nearing a move to Arsenal. Anthony Gordon has also opted for greener pastures, joining Barcelona.

Howe’s plans to depart were revealed on Thursday, and United see an opportunity to swoop for a long-term transfer target in Hall.

The full-back, a product of Chelsea’s academy, is already thought to be keen to leave the north-east, and Howe’s exit will only push him closer to the exit door.

Per reports in The Sun, the Red Devils are prepared to take advantage of Newcastle’s internal turmoil as they weigh up whether to move for Hall.

They consider the left-back a tempting option to replace Luke Shaw, who is out of contract next summer.

Hall could still be convinced to remain in Newcastle, the report adds, with his current contract running until the summer of 2029. It is also unclear whether Newcastle would be willing to sanction more departures, with the new Premier League season getting underway in just a few weeks.

It remains to be seen whether the impending appointment of Matthias Jaissle will tempt Hall to remain in situ.

Hall has four England caps to his name but was a surprise exclusion from Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the World Cup.

He has plied his trade in Newcastle since 2023, when he joined the club on loan from Chelsea. That move was made permanent the following summer.

Space is set to be opened up in United’s squad for a new full-back after Michael Carrick put Harry Amass up for sale earlier this week. The club is also keen to get Marcus Rashford off the books, with his £325,000-per-week wages proving something of a burden on their finances.
