After the Chairboys benefitted from a sending off on Tuesday evening, the shoe was on the other foot this time around. Taylor Allen hauled down Dom Ballard who was clean through on goal inside 10 minutes, reducing his side to 10 men.

Orient were quick to captialise on their numerical advantage, as they took the lead just 10 minutes later. A deflected Demetri Mitchell shot caught out Will Norris, who fumbled it into the bottom left corner of the net.

The second half was an end-to-end contest, with both teams creating chances, and Wycombe rather frustrating their opponents with their staunch defensive efforts.

However, their resolve was broken in stoppage time when Ballard teed up Idris El Mizouni, who wrapped up the three points for the home side with a sumptuous curling effort, which clipped the inside of Norris' far post on its way in.

The game got off to the worst possible start for Wycombe. Allen hauled down talisman Ballard who found himself one-on-one from a long ball, which saw referee Simon Mather reach straight for his back pocket, and show the Chairboys defender the red card.

It got even worse for the visitors just minutes later, when Mitchell's deflected shot squirmed under the gloves of Norris and into the back of the Wycombe net, in what was another awful moment for the Wanderers keeper.

The Chairboys didn't roll over though, and were almost back on level terms six minutes later when Connor Taylor's shot from a deep Aaron Morley free-kick was brilliantly blocked by Tom James.

On the stroke of half-time, Wycombe had a penalty shout waved away when Will Forrester clipped Fred Onyedinma from behind in the box, but Mather wasn't having any of it, waving the shouts away.

The O's went in with a 1-0 lead at the break, and with the numerical advantage after the early red card for Allen. It felt like it would be a long way back for their opponents though, despite only trailing by a single goal.

The second half almost started perfectly for Orient, as Ballard's curling shot which looked destined for the top corner was turned behind for a corner to the O's.

Richie Wellens' side looked to use their pace to hurt Wycombe, and almost did when Theo Archibald burst down the right flank and drilled a low cross into the box, which evaded everyone.

Onyedinma was in the wars again with 15 minutes to go. A long ball forward from Norris set Wycombe in two-on-one, but Will Forrester hauled down the Wanderers winger, conceding the yellow card but preventing a dangerous break.

Leyton Orient then fumbled a great chance to make it 2-0 when Mitchell and Ballard broke, with Niall Huggins the only one back. Mitchell's pass was undersold though, allowing Ewan Henderson to dash back and clear over the bar.

Wycombe's best chance of the afternoon came 10 minutes from time. An overhit cross from Cauley Woodrow was collected by Huggins, who found Dan Harvie in the box. His shot was a weak one though, and no trouble for Will Dennis.

The visitors would live to regret that miss, as the home side then wrapped up the three points in stoppage time though. A lovely strike from El Mizouni, curled in off the far post, putting the result beyond doubt.

Richie Wellens shares Demetri Mitchell delight after opening his Leyton Orient league account

Speaking to PA Media post-match, Orient boss Wellens said: “When he [Mitchell] goes on the outside, it excites people. It was good for him to get his goal and he’s fully deserved it.

“He’s admitted that he’s performed nowhere near his potential, but for me in the last four or five weeks and the three or four weeks in training, I kept saying to him that’s he’s training really well.

“In the friendlies we played he was tremendous and he deserved his opportunity.

“The sending-off probably gave our players too much thinking time, and Wycombe were brave – they kept two players up there.”

Michael Duff rues individual errors once again as Wycombe fall to defeat in E10

Also speaking to PA Media post-match, Wycombe boss Michael Duff said: “It’s a defeat and it’s a tough one to swallow – everything has gone against us today.

“All I’ve said to the players is for them to do what we’ve asked them to do, which they did. They ran their hearts out for each other.

“You can’t plan for individual errors, their goalkeeper has got man of the match. To play with 10 men for 85 minutes and that happens tells you something.

“I thought the players were brilliant today and I thought the supporters were as well. So yes, it’s a kick in the nether regions.

“It’s a red card, I’m not arguing with that. People are human beings, they make mistakes.”
