Richie Wellens’ future as Leyton Orient manager has been put to bed following the appointment of Jack Wilshere as the new Luton Town head coach.

It was reported last week that the 45-year-old was on the Hatters’ radar following their decision to part ways with Matt Bloomfield.

However, the League One side have instead opted to appoint the former Arsenal midfielder, who was available as a free agent after departing his role as a coach at Norwich City earlier this year.

This will be Wilshere’s first role as a manager, and will mean Wellens can continue his work with the O’s.

The Leyton Orient boss is a popular figure at the club, having guided them from League Two to the League One play-off final during his time in charge.

When asked how relieved they are about Wellens staying, FLW’s Leyton Orient fan pundit Alex Rose claimed that the word relief barely even covers describing it.

He outlined just how important the coach is to the club, praising him as the best coach in League One at the moment, and that having him at Brisbane Road is an honour.

“I don’t think relief covers it, especially after we’ve just won 4-0 at the weekend,” Rose told Football League World.

“We’ve scored the most goals in the league, we might have let in the most in the league but we’ve just kept a clean sheet.

“Couldn’t be more relieved.

“He has really taken Leyton Orient from the bottom of the Football League to 90 minutes away from the Championship.

“He has turned players from very average players to £1 million players.

“And if Orient want to progress as a club — we’re building a new stadium in the next couple of years, our new owners made it very clear that he’s got Championship ambitions — then Richie Wellens, for me, the managers in League One have come out and said it, he is the best manager in the league.

“And so to have him at a club like Orient, it’s an honour.

“So, very relieved.”

Leyton Orient’s start to the season

Leyton Orient reached the play-off final last season, missing out on promotion to the Championship with a defeat to Charlton Athletic.

It’s been a disappointing start to this campaign, with the hangover of that loss potentially impacting the team.

But a 4-0 win over Doncaster Rovers last weekend saw the club move up to 13th in the table, with 14 points from their opening 12 games.

Next up for Wellens’ side is a trip to face Rotherham United on 18 October in a 3pm kick-off.

Richie Wellens staying is huge for Leyton Orient

Wellens has done a fantastic job at Leyton Orient, and it’s no surprise that supporters will be extremely relieved that he’s staying for now.

The Luton job would’ve been a step-up in stature, but the chance to move to another League One side wouldn’t be the most compelling next step in his career.

The London outfit are on a positive trajectory themselves, and reaching the play-off final last season shows they have the potential to earn their place in the Championship in the near future anyway.

There is a lot of ambition now being shown by the O’s, so Wellens has every reason to want to stay with the club instead of moving to somewhere like Luton.
