Chelsea striker Liam Delap (22) is close to making his long-awaited return from injury and could feature in next week’s Carabao Cup tie against Wolves, as revealed by Sky Sports.
The 22-year-old, signed from Ipswich Town for £30m in the summer, was initially expected to be sidelined until December after sustaining a hamstring injury in August’s win over Fulham. However, Delap’s recovery has progressed ahead of schedule, with the forward rejoining first-team training this week.
“Liam took part with the team for the first time yesterday,” Maresca said. “He’s not available for tomorrow’s game, but probably for the next one. The schedule can always change, but it’s looking positive.”
Delap’s absence has forced Maresca to rotate his striking options, with Joao Pedro and academy prospect Tyrique George both featuring up front. Teenager Marc Guiu, recalled from his loan at Sunderland after Delap’s injury, impressed in Wednesday’s 5-1 Champions League victory over Ajax, scoring his first goal of the season.
Maresca praised Guiu’s attitude following a recent “wake-up chat.” “He wasn’t training well,” said the Italian. “Since we spoke, he’s been fantastic, working hard and showing maturity. He’s ready to start.”
