According to Coluna Do Fla, Toluca, the new Concacaf champions, will await the 2026 Libertadores winners in the Dérbi das Américas at the FIFA Intercontinental in December. For Flamengo to meet them, the Rio club must first win the 2026 Libertadores.
Toluca secured their berth on Saturday 30, edging Tigres after a 1-1 draw and a 6-5 penalty shootout in the Concacaf Champions Cup final.
Five teams are already confirmed for FIFA’s Intercontinental. They are Toluca, Al Ahli of Saudi Arabia, Auckland FC of New Zealand, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa and PSG of France, with the bracket mirroring last year’s edition.
Al Ahli face Auckland, the winners meeting Mamelodi Sundowns for a place in the Copa Challenger semi-final. On the other side, Toluca play the Libertadores champions in the Dérbi das Américas, the victors also advancing to the Copa Challenger. The side that emerges then meets PSG in the final.
As 2025 Libertadores winners, Flamengo first beat Cruz Azul 2-1 in the Dérbi das Américas, with Arrascaeta scoring twice. They then overcame African champions Pyramids 2-0 in the Copa Challenger through Léo Pereira and Danilo. The final finished 1-1 against PSG, Jorginho on target, before defeat on penalties.
To return, Flamengo must again win the Libertadores. The competition is still at the round of 16, with Cruzeiro awaiting in August, first leg at the Mineirão and the second at the Maracanã.
