Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will not be appearing at Estadio Azteca after hopes of landmark visits fell through.

According to Americayya.net, there had been a realistic chance of both stars featuring in consecutive fixtures at the Coloso de Santa Úrsula.

Messi could have reached the Concachampions quarter-finals with Inter Miami, which would have set up a tie against Club América. Instead Miami were knocked out by Nashville SC on the away goals rule after a 1-1 aggregate draw.

As for Ronaldo, a Mexico v Portugal match was announced for 28 March at the Azteca, raising hopes the number seven would travel. He was injured at the start of this month and, apparently not fully recovered, was not called up for the fixture.

The stadium’s relaunch might have been marked by back-to-back appearances from two of the game’s greats. On this occasion, it will not happen.
