Inter Miami, where Lionel Messi plays, and Valencia have entered the race for Benfica captain Nicolás Otamendi, whose contract expires this summer, according to Glorioso 1904.
Talks over a new deal in Lisbon are described as at an impasse with no resolution in sight, increasing the likelihood of a departure. The defender already has proposals from Argentina and Saudi Arabia, and now could head to the United States or Spain.
Messi could be a significant influence as the David Beckham-led club seek to convince him to accept their offer. With Otamendi not placing the sporting project first, discussions with the MLS side may be easier.
Valencia are also keen. Otamendi previously played at Mestalla before joining Manchester City and remains a popular figure there, but financial constraints could be a major obstacle.
Benfica are willing to renew if he agrees to reduce his salary.
This season Otamendi has made 48 appearances for Benfica, 29 in Liga Portugal Betclic, 14 in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça. Across 4,224 minutes he has scored three goals and is valued at one million euros.
