Lionel Messi struck twice in Argentina's 2-0 win over Austria on Monday night, taking his World Cup tally to 18 and making him the leading scorer in the tournament's history across men and women.
He also moved clear of Germany's Miroslav Klose on the men's list.
According to L'Équipe, the previous overall mark belonged to Brazil's Marta with 17 across six editions from 2003 to 2023.
Messi, 38, could add to his total in Argentina's final group match against Jordan on Sunday at 4.00, then in a round of 32 tie against an as yet unknown opponent.
Marta, 40, will have to wait until the 2027 World Cup in Brazil to improve her tally, if she is selected.
