Liverpool’s Alisson Becker succession plan began back in 2024.

Sporting director Richard Hughes agreed a deal worth an initial £24m to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia following a strong Euro 2024.

The Georgian was then loaned back to Valencia for the 2024/25 season - going on to enjoy another solid La Liga campaign.

The 25-year-old was finally brought to Anfield last summer as part of a major goalkeeping refit that saw Caoimhin Kelleher leave for Brentford. And owing to Alisson’s frequent injury troubles Mamardashvili has had plenty of scope to prove himself.

He made 10 appearances in the Premier League last season - featuring in 20 games overall and conceding a whopping 34 times.

Liverpool not convinced by Mamardashvili

Mamardashvili has also had issues with his distribution - with the general feeling among fans that they are unconvinced with him being Alisson’s successor.

With the Brazilian being targetted by Juventus - and the deal looks a real possibility - it means Richard Hughes’ succession plan for Alisson will be given an immediate stress test.

There now however appears to be a U-Turn afoot at Anfield with the admission that Mamardashvili isn’t good enough to take over in the event that Alisson moves to Turin.

According to a report in Football Insider the outgoing Premier League champions will seek to sign a different No1 this summer if Alisson goes rather than relying on Mamardashvili.

Liverpool shopping for a new goalkeeper if Alisson leaves

“They would hope to find someone with a stronger pedigree at the top level than current back-up Giorgi Mamardashvili,” the report reads.

“The Georgian played more games than was planned at Anfield last term, but the club are in no doubt that they do not want him as their starting option whenever Alisson ultimately departs.”

This is a damning indictment of the goalkeeping transfer strategy. Kelleher has gone on to star for a Brentford side who qualified for Europe and it’s no secret that Mamarashvili has been unhappy with the amount of football he’s been getting.

The shot-stopper has been linked with another loan move - either to Valencia or else Juventus as reported in recent days.

An early halt may be called to this deal and Liverpool will no doubt struggle to get their money back on Mamardashvili if they do decide to jettison him on a permanent deal.
