Liverpool and Manchester United appear set to miss out on one of Ligue 1’s most exciting attacking talents, with TeamTalk reporting that Maghnes Akliouche has made Paris Saint-Germain his preferred destination this summer.
The Monaco forward has attracted widespread attention after an outstanding campaign that earned him a place in Didier Deschamps’ World Cup squad. Interest from across Europe has been substantial, with Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and clubs in Spain and Italy all monitoring his progress over an extended period.

However, the latest developments suggest the player has now made his position unmistakably clear.
According to TeamTalk, intermediaries have remained in regular contact with Akliouche’s representatives throughout the transfer window. The response delivered to interested clubs has been consistent.
Sources indicate that Akliouche wants PSG if he leaves Monaco this summer, with discussions between the French champions and Monaco now progressing positively.

That decision significantly changes the landscape. Liverpool and Manchester United had both completed extensive scouting work, identifying the versatile attacker as a player capable of strengthening multiple positions across the frontline. Newcastle also viewed him as an ideal addition to Eddie Howe’s attacking options.
Recruitment can often depend as much on player preference as financial strength. In this case, PSG’s appeal appears to have outweighed interest from the Premier League.
TeamTalk reports that negotiations are moving towards an agreement worth around £60million. PSG have already been creating room within their squad, with Goncalo Ramos completing a club record move to AC Milan and Lee Kang in closing in on a transfer to Atletico Madrid.

Those exits have created space for fresh arrivals, with Akliouche emerging as one of the club’s leading attacking priorities.
His numbers explain why demand has been so high. Seven goals and nine assists last season reflected a player comfortable operating across several attacking roles. His intelligence in possession, technical quality and ability to create chances have established him among the most sought after young attackers in French football.
For Liverpool and Manchester United, this development does not necessarily signal a failed recruitment strategy. Elite clubs regularly monitor dozens of players before narrowing their focus, recognising that not every target will be attainable.
When a player makes his preferred destination clear, recruitment departments typically move quickly towards alternative options rather than prolong negotiations with little prospect of success.
From a Liverpool perspective, this report will be disappointing but understandable. The club have built a reputation for identifying talented players early, yet recruitment has always relied on more than simply identifying quality. If Akliouche has decided PSG is where he wants to play, there is little value in pursuing a transfer that lacks the player’s full commitment. Liverpool supporters will trust the recruitment team to move towards other high calibre targets who are fully invested in joining the club.
Manchester United supporters may feel similarly frustrated. The squad still requires additional creativity and versatility in attacking areas, and Akliouche appeared to fit that profile well. Even so, recent transfer windows have shown the importance of targeting players who genuinely want to wear the shirt. Chasing reluctant signings rarely produces the desired outcome.
For both fan bases, the positive takeaway is that their clubs were competing for one of Europe’s most highly regarded young attackers. Strong scouting networks remain essential, but every transfer window brings situations where player preference decides the outcome. Rather than dwelling on this setback, attention should quickly turn towards alternative targets capable of making an immediate impact. Successful recruitment is measured by the quality of the players eventually signed, not by the number of names linked during the summer.
