In a recent post on X, L’Equipe journalist Hugo Guillemet claimed that Liverpool are eyeing a move for Olympique Lyonnais winger Malick Fofana. It has been mentioned that the Reds are eager to get a deal done for the Belgian wide player this summer.

Fofana’s Impressive Rise In French Football

Fofana caught the eye at times with his performances on the left side of Lyon’s attack last season. The 20-year-old registered 11 goals and picked up six assists in 41 appearances for the French outfit in the previous campaign across all competitions.

The talented wide player deserves some credit for averaging 1.76 shots per 90 minutes in the Ligue 1. He also kept 48.4% of his attempts on target. Fofana was even a tidy distributor of the ball after completing 77.4% of his attempted passes in the top tier of French football (stats via fbref.com).

His current contract at the French club will run out in the summer of 2028 which could make it tough for Liverpool to snap him up on the cheap this off-season.

What Will Fofana Bring To Liverpool?

Fofana is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and has got the vision to create some inviting chances for his teammates to find the back of the net. He can strike the ball with power from long range and can contribute by scoring and creating his fair share of goals from the wide areas.

The Belgian youngster is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also function as a right-winger if asked to do so. However, there are some concerns over whether he would be able to handle the physical side and high intensity of the Premier League if the Reds manage to get him on board in this summer transfer window.

At 20, Fofana has got the potential to be a future star in the Premier League as long as he continues to improve with each season. He would no doubt bring more firepower to Liverpool boss Arne Slot’s frontline in the long run.

Fofana is a prospect to watch out for in the future. Therefore, the Merseyside outfit would do well to get a deal over the line for him this off-season. However, Slot has to be patient with his development before he can best out of the gifted starlet.
