In a recent report, Sport Bild (subscription required) revealed that Liverpool are keeping tabs on SC Freiburg playmaker Merlin Rohl. It is understood that the Reds would have to compete with Everton in the race to sign the German talent this summer.
The 22-year-old managed to shine at times for Freiburg in the previous campaign but failed to be productive for his team in the final third. Rohl secured one assist but failed to get his name on the scoresheet in 20 appearances for the German outfit last season in various competitions.
The German sensation could only manage to average 1.12 shots per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga and kept 25% of his attempts on target. He distributed possession accurately in the opposition half after he completed 76% of his attempted passes in the German top tier (stats via fbref.com).
Rohl is currently amongst the best young attacking midfielders in German football. Thus, it is no wonder that the Reds are eager to get a deal done for him this off-season.

Rohl is full of energy and running in the final third and can engineer the odd chance for others around him in and around the opposition penalty area. He can make some promising runs with the ball but needs to improve his finishing in front of the opponent’s goal. Standing at 1.92m, Rohl is a strong presence in the air as well.
The German attacker primarily functions in the number ten position but can also play as a centre-forward or serve as a box-to-box midfielder if required.
We can expect Rohl to add more energy and dynamism to Liverpool boss Arne Slot’s midfield department in the long run. He is already good enough to serve as a good, rotational piece in the Merseyside club’s match-day squad.
At 22, the future looks quite bright for Rohl as long as he continues to improve with each year. He is undoubtedly a prospect to watch out for in the future. Therefore, the Reds should consider going all out to bring him on board in this summer transfer period.
